For maybe the hundredth time, I wondered why the fuck I’d told Grayson he could throw his eighteenth birthday party at my house.

‘Sorry, love!’ the guy who’d pushed my back so I bumped into the counter hollered, his drink spilling out of his plastic cup onto the floor, and I winced.

Ace and I were hiding out in the kitchen, as he mixed one of his world-famous cocktails for me. Meaning that it was famous in his world: Beurre.

On my way to the kitchen, I’d walked past Spencer and Tyler standing with Remi over by the fireplace, an argument having just broken out between them, and I glided past as fast as I could. Nobody needed to get caught up in their crap. I already had enough crap on my plate as it was.

Rock was dancing in the middle of the room with Savannah hanging off him, and I’d walked even faster past them, basically breaking out into a run.

Things were still tense between us.

After the conversation we had after slipping up and having sex at Beurrefest, I knew he liked Savannah. Knew that he wasn’t faking it half as much as I’d thought he was, but that didn’t mean it didn’t still hurt.

‘Here you are!’ Ace said, handing me the drink he’d been working on for the last ten minutes.

Better be fucking worth it.

A glass smashed in the living room, and we both looked at each other, a question in our eyes: Are we going to go check that out?

Then we laughed and shook our heads. Whatever it was wasn’t worth our time. I’d already spent the majority of the night acting uptight and it had got me nowhere.

‘Cheers.’ I grabbed the glass and clinked it with his. ‘And thanks for keeping me company. I’m surprised you’re not with the guys.’

‘Well, Spencer got it into his head that he needed to talk to Remi, and I wasn’t joining him for that.’ Ace shook his head. ‘We all miss Max, you know? But it’s not like Remi was his girlfriend when he died.’

I gave a grunt of agreement, not wanting to touch that sentence with my opinion. Because, unlike the others, I couldn’t say truthfully that I missed Max. If anything, I was happy he was no longer around to torment me for being the only girl in our group.

Remi stormed into the room, bumping into Ace, a scowl on her face.

‘Watch where you’re going,’ Ace growled. Remi’s response was to laugh, a cackle really, high-pitched and derisive. The hatred she felt towards us both was thick in the air, and I rolled my eyes, wondering when she’d become such a bitch. Remi had always been popular, but in the last couple of years it had only got worse, and it had definitely gone to her very fake, very bleached, blonde head.

‘Not like I walked into you on purpose,’ she spat, checking behind her to see if anybody had followed her. ‘I would apologise, but you’re not worth it.’

With a flick of her hair, she went outside, leaving Ace standing there with his jaw agape.
